Title: Unison
Medium: Iron Sheet, Metal Strips and Sheets, Wires, Coal Tar, Molten Metal, Rivets, Bolts and Oil Paint
Description: Unison, a commissioned installation by the Taj Hotel Group at Taj Vivanta Gurgaon, captures the amalgamation of multiple media that comes together to form the image of the city in transition and its eventual metamorphosis into a state of natural beauty.
The installation comprises of a metal tree of which is 12 feet in height approximately, with its branches reaching out into the night sky. From its extended branches, the tree then forms into a man made building as we approach its stump and finally resumes its natural form with the protrusion of its gargantuan roots. The building is intricately adorned with multiple media such as metal washers, copper strips and copper braids seeks to represent the modern sense of architecture prevalent at the space coupled with its metamorphosis into a beautiful extension of life – a tree.
Along with this main quasi sculpture, there are two circular iron discs placed adjacent to the tree, representing the whole, unifying the ideas of the man made and the natural i.e the tree – building structure into a one singular form. In one of the discs, multiple strips of aluminium, copper and brass have been bolted together with rivets and bolts, and then sawn off from the centre in an abstract pattern, creating an uneven
metallic texture which covers part of the area of the disc, signifying the mutation of time through its abstract form, while the second disc is adorned with beautiful molten metal sheets and wires coupled with the use of Oil Paint and multiple other media such a metal filigree so as to signify balance within the state of transition.
The installation seeks to depict the unison of multiple media forming a singular theme – that of a city constantly in flux and eventually metamorphosing into the proverbial “tree of life” – its branches and roots connecting these multiple elements together and becoming a singular form. The installation captures the city, transitioning from its past to its present and bringing forth its own independent identity, within the realm of nature and constant change.
